Moldova
Adoption
Moldova
is a landlocked republic of hilly plains located in eastern Europe
sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine. Moldova (formerly Moldavia) is very
fertile with rich black soil lying west of the Carpathian Mountains
between the Prut and
Dniester
(Dnestr) Rivers.
Formerly part of
Romania
,
Moldova
was incorporated into the
Soviet Union
at the close of World War II but won its independence from
the
USSR
in 1991.
After
closing in 2001, the
Moldova
adoption program reopened in 2003.
In the Republic of
Moldova, children are cared for in orphanages which are organized
according to age: there are maternity orphanages for children
under three, pre-school orphanages for children aged four to seven,
and then school- aged orphanages for older children.
